MAINE DESTINATIONS

  • Down East : The term "Down East" refers to a sailor's heading. The prevailing maritime winds took the old sailing fleets down wind and east along the coast. If you look towards Canada from Schoodic Point on the northeastern edge of Acadia National Park, you'll begin to see Down East Maine. You see where tourism ends and one of the last places for real adventure on the East Coast of the United States begins. It's a place where narrow peninsulas finger out into the cold Fundy current. Tamarack pine, Peat bogs, and blueberry barrens replace oak forests. The fog is more enduring and impenetrable. The farther east one paddles, the more subarctic the coastal ecosystems appear. The climate is cool, raw, and damp all but one or two months each year. Rare arctic flowers occupy the extreme tips of islandsand peninsulas. Even today, the settlements along the coast and occupying islands are few and far between.

INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS

Ireland Trip description

  • Ireland Coast : August 16th- 23rd, 2008
This expedition takes us to northwestern Ireland along the shores of County Donegal’s Rosses region. Our goal is to paddle a stretch of coastal waters from Crohy Head to Bloody Foreland, logging approximately 60 nautical miles of breathtaking scenery. It is a wilderness expedition: nights are spent camping, and seakayaking is our primary mode of transportation. It is rugged country, with 500 ft cliffs often rising straight out of the sea, host to barren land seemingly fit only for the sheep that graze it. Barren of trees indeed, and yet its “Emerald Isle” nickname is well deserved: absolutely beautiful, cloaked with a green so fresh and vibrant that it may well be unique to the entire world.

  • Mingan Archipelago(E-mail us for scheduling)
At first glance, the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve hides its spectacular treasures. Its low-lying islands--some wooded, some almost bare--rise starkly above the cold waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At sunrise a new world reveals itself. Mysterious limestone monoliths tower over island shorelines covered with beautiful arctic flowers. A puffin cartwheels into the sea. A few strokes away, a minke whale breaches the surface. Les Iles de Mingan offers the explorer scenic landscapes and a rich variety of wildlife. It’s an endlessly fascinating area for those interested in kayaking, botany, geology, ornithology, whale watching, photography, history and more.

Chile

This trip takes us near the southern tip of South America, where the Andes meet the sea in one of the most magnificent landscapes on earth. Here, we'll embark on a multi-day, multi-element expedition leading from a high Andean lake down to the Pacific. Passing through glacially sculpted canyons and beneath active volcanoes, we will pause along the way to break bread with traditional subsistance farmers and fishermen. Hotsprings and snowcap peaks looming above the fjords are the norm in this area. This trip is conceived as a 'source to sea' expedition, meaning that we will begin at the headwaters of a major watershed and follow it down all the way to the Pacific. The diversity of landscapes encountered and the warmth of the local people are among the major highlights of this trip, which requires no previous experience.
